Lexus UX Powertrains

Considering we've seen Lexus patent the names UX200, UX250, and UX250h.

I think it's kind of pressing to assume that the UX200 be coming with the 8AR-FTS engine which is a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder that'll produce approximately 235hp and 258lb-ft of torque (give or take a few). Assuming that the "t" will find it's way in there. Otherwise it could be a modified version of that same engine, without the turbo, that produces 150hp and is bound in Russia... Highly doubt that.

The only reason I say it's a given is because Lexus already has an NX200t, IS200t, GS200t, RX200t, and RC200t and they all use the same engine.

The UX250h could utilize the 2AR-FXE engine that comes in the NX350h which, contrary to what you would think from the name, is a 2.5L hybrid engine that has an output of 154hp and 153lb-ft of torque

Agree/Disagree? Thoughts?

Last I heard Lexus wants to push that 8AR-FTS engine hard into different applications so this might be another one. Going even higher up they want to merge two of those to make a high performance V8 apparently.

They have a history of using the same engine over and over to the point its a cash machine for them.

Putting two of them together to make a twin-turbo v8 would be insane and something I would love to see. Especially because it'll be done on an oem level and not in a shop where someone is just chopping and screwing to make it work.

Making the high performance V8 out of two of these engines, what would they place that one in?

From what motor authority is saying, we're most likely not going to see a plug-in Lexus EX, so if the company decides to go green they'll go straight for a battery-electric car or hydrogen fuel-cell Lexus UX.

Lexus to skip plug-in hybrids and go straight to EVs, fuel cells

For Lexus to fit in with the other high end luxury car makers they will be better off launching a car that from the start of its life is an EV or PHEV. Just look at what BMW has been doing. That's a great model to follow.

To hybrid or not to hybrid, that is the question. Actually it's mostly dependent on cost for me but I am leaning towards the UX 250h. It has the Atkinson Cycle version of the all pertrol 2.0-liter engine, but with a hybrid system for 176 hp and around 38 mpg combined. That's a bit more power and better fuel economy than the 168 horsepower UX 200. And it comes with Lexus' new electric all-wheel-drive system.

One fact we can't escape is the fact that if you buy a hybrid for any real reason these days its due to the fact that you like the tech and aren't into it to save the environment. Maybe into the mid 2020's we'll see hybrid that make a real difference on our carbon footprint.

As of late most hybrid variants are actually the top performing trims. Not only do they come with a boost to hp, but you also get better acceleration off the line. The UX 250h is also the first Lexus to offer Predictive Efficient Drive, a system that analyzes driving habits along with road and traffic conditions to optimize charging and discharging of the hybrid battery.
